Two long-time Discover team members – Andrew Duckett and John Coyne — have earned the prestigious Distinguished Engineer designation. This honor is extended to individuals who have consistently demonstrated outstanding technical contributions, leadership, and impact. Andrew and John are now the seventh and eighth employees in Discover history to receive this distinction.

Andrew Duckett

During his 19 years at Discover, Andrew has established an acute understanding of how the business operates and a contextual awareness of the day-to-day challenges engineers and developers face. He has a keen understanding of the tools they use and the cognitive load they manage. Andrew has excelled as an Expert Engineer, acting as a change agent at the forefront of many of the major technology and platform shifts.

Andrew will take on a new role as Distinguished Engineer of Customer Success Platform & Production Engineering, where he'll focus on addressing areas of friction across natural organizational and technology boundaries to accelerate the implementation of automation and observability to deliver increased productivity and quality.

"Andrew distinguishes himself from others through his breadth of knowledge across
technology domains, ability to quickly distill complex problems, and propensity to drive outcomes across cross functional teams,” says Angel Diaz, SVP of Business Technology Customer Success.

John Coyne

During his 20+ years at Discover, John Coyne has played an instrumental role in building the very first mobile website and application for the company, as well as developing some of the first REST APIs that supported the mobile app. He served as the primary architect and developer for the first Event Bus and Real Time Alerts service for customers. Two of John's major contributions are used by millions of Discover customers every day: the authentication and authorization services for the Discover website and the mobile application.

John will be taking on a new role as Distinguished Engineer of Application Engineering, where he will apply his broad expertise to addressing critical engineering challenges across the entire Direct Banking – Customer Technology Organization while continuing to build out a strong developer advocacy and support community.

"John routinely finds new ways to innovate and improve our products and processes. His commitment to delivering beneficial outcomes for our customers fuels his drive to remove impediments for the engineering community and continually raise the bar on our engineering practices,” says Jason Burke, VP of Application Development.
